Repurposed & Transformed Space in Norwood, MA

Norwood Space Center is a hive of creative commerce, where people and businesses can thrive in a community setting using shared workspace, self storage, event and warehouse space.

Phase one of the project was completed in April 2017 and includes a new, 66,000 ­square ­foot Planet Self Storage facility among a mix of flexible space for events, retail, shared work, and warehousing.

In collaboration with Cathartes, JEI was challenged to transform a historic mill into a mixed­-use development set to offer flexible work environments for innovative businesses and artisans. This entailed renovating 300,000 square feet of space and 24 buildings situated across an 18 acre site.

Creating an inviting work environment required bringing in convenient access, natural light, HVAC, as well as kitchen and bathroom facilities into a series of large industrial spaces that were not originally designed for commercial occupancy.

The Result

Transformed the site by enhancing the curb appeal with new lighting, landscaping, parking and exterior building facades.

Reprogrammed the buildings into sectors that include self-storage, office, retail, and maker-space.

Converted the interiors to meet the modern use demands while maintaining the turn of the century industrial vibe.
